È considerato uno dei massimi esponenti della musica blues. Nel 2004, la rivista Rolling Stone lo piazzò alla 51ª posizione nella lista dei 100 migliori artisti di tutti i tempi e alla 31ª nell’elenco dei migliori cantanti di sempre. Questo CD è essenzialmente una registrazione sul campo: il materiale è stato registrato durante l’estate del 1969 nell’appartamento di Lewis a Memphis, mentre era seduto sul letto. Autore: Furry Lewis, pseudonimo di Walter E. Lewis (Greenwood, 6 marzo 1893 – Memphis, 14 settembre 1981), è stato un cantante e chitarrista statunitense. Fu uno dei primi musicisti blues degli anni venti a venire riscoperto e rilanciato con grande successo negli anni sessanta durante il periodo di blues e folk revival. [...]. Nel 1959 venne riscoperto da Samuel Charters; gli anni sessanta videro il rilancio della sua carriera e riuscì a ottenere un buon successo commerciale e popolare. Ebbe l’opportunità di aprire concerti per i Rolling Stones e di andare in tournée con Leon Russell. Gli anni settanta confermarono questo successo anche internazionalmente; ottenne inoltre una parte nel film di Burt Reynolds Un uomo da buttare (W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings) e fece un’apparizione al Tonight Show di Johnny Carson. Nel 1976 Joni Mitchell gli dedicò la canzone Furry Sings the Blues, contenuta nell’album Hejira. [...].

Il nome dell’album deriva dal testo della prima canzone dell’album, Roll Up and Shine, proprio come il nome dell’album precedente, Word Gets Around, deriva dal testo della canzone finale di quell’album. L’album è stato un successo commerciale a sorpresa per gli Stereophonics ma ha ricevuto recensioni contrastanti. Nel 1968, durante un soggiorno a Londra, grazie a un amico che aveva suonato per il duo inglese “Peter&Gordon”, Taylor riuscì, tramite Peter Asher (parte del duo e fratello di Jane Asher, allora fidanzata di Paul McCartney) a ottenere un’audizione per la Apple Records dei Beatles. Svoltasi in una piccola stanza della Apple alla presenza di Peter, Paul McCartney e George Harrison, James scelse di far ascoltare Something in the Way She Moves (che poi ispirò George per la sua Something). Il brano piacque ai due Beatles e Paul chiese a Peter se volesse produrre James per un album. Peter accettò e iniziarono le registrazioni di James Taylor. Autore: I Midnight Oil (noti anche con il nomignolo di The Oils tra i loro fan), sono un gruppo rock australiano originario di Sydney, che ha iniziato a suonare nel 1972 con il nome di Farm. La formazione originale includeva il batterista Rob Hirst, il bassista Andrew James e il tastierista/chitarrista Jim Moginie. [...]. Il cantante Peter Garrett stava studiando all’Università Nazionale Australiana di Canberra, quando rispose a un annuncio per un provino con i Farm, e nel 1975 il gruppo iniziò ad andare in tour sulla costa orientale del paese. Verso la fine del 1976 Garrett si trasferì a Sydney per completare i propri studi di giurisprudenza, e i Farm cambiarono il proprio nome in Midnight Oil estraendolo a sorte tra altre alternative su un biglietto messo in un cappello. Un ruolo importante per il gruppo lo svolse il loro manager Gary Morris, capace di negoziare contratti favorevoli con gli organizzatori dei tour e con le case discografiche e di tamponare le critiche della stampa specializzata. Nel 1977 al gruppo si unì il chitarrista Martin Rotsey e i Midnight Oil fondarono una propria etichetta discografica, la Powderworks, con la quale pubblicarono l’omonimo album di debutto nel novembre del 1978 e il singolo Run by Night nel dicembre successivo. Nel 1980 il bassista James dovette abbandonare il gruppo per problemi di salute e venne sostituito da Peter Gifford, che a sua volta fu poi sostituito da Bones Hillman nel 1987. Il gruppo ha avuto una carriera lunga e importante, diventando famoso per le sue energiche sonorità hard-rock, per le intense esibizioni dal vivo e per le prese di posizione politiche, soprattutto in favore di cause come il movimento anti-nucleare, l’ambientalismo e il sostegno agli aborigeni australiani. Contenuto: In Search of the Mystery è l’album di debutto del sassofonista Gato Barbieri. Fu registrato a New York City il 15 marzo 1967 e fu pubblicato più tardi quell’anno dalla ESP-Disk. Nell’album, Barbieri è affiancato dal violoncellista Calo Scott, dal bassista Norris Jones e dal batterista Bobby Kapp. [...]. In una recensione per AllMusic, Michael G. Nastos ha scritto: Mentre gli archi nuotano intorno ai ritmi di Kapp, Barbieri si tuffa senza paura del risultato, consentendo agli altri di estendersi in arene armoniche e sonore di loro scelta. Questo approccio democratico esalta la musica senza bisogno di indicazioni di tempo... questa registrazione unica... deve essere considerata una delle prime opere di [Barbieri], se non primordiali. Considerato l’iniziatore del musical statunitense, la sua opera spazia dalla musica colta al jazz. [...]. Le composizioni di Gershwin hanno attraversato i generi blues e musica classica, e le sue melodie più popolari sono ampiamente conosciute. Tra le sue opere più note ci sono le composizioni orchestrali Rapsodia in blu (1924) e Un americano a Parigi (1928), così come l’opera Porgy and Bess (1935). [...]. Durante una carriera attiva durata più di 50 anni, Hooker è riuscito a sfornare successi da milioni di copie vendute a entrambe le estremità della sua illustre carriera, durante la quale il suo blues ha coperto tutti gli aspetti dell’esperienza blues. Che affare. 10 dischi di John Lee Hooker a un prezzo incredibile. Nel complesso, il suono è molto buono, con alcune canzoni nei primi due dischi che suonano davvero ruvide. I primi 8 dischi sono dei primi Hooker solisti con occasionali chitarre o piano di accompagnamento. Il disco 9 sembra registrazioni di Veejay e il 10° è un concerto dal vivo. Hooker menziona Lowell Fulsom e SP Leary, ma non c’è risposta dal vivo del pubblico. Bella roba, comunque. L’unico inconveniente è che non ci sono note di copertina. Nato in una famiglia di musicisti del Mississippi, John Lee Hooker è il cugino di Earl Hooker. Sono famose le sue esibizioni in stile parlato (Talking blues) e il suo stile boogie ostinato, divenuti le sue prerogative caratteristiche. La sua musica, da un punto di vista della ritmica, è libera, come da tradizione comune ai primi blues acustici dei musicisti provenienti dall’area del cosiddetto delta del Mississippi. [...].
