Cappuccetto Rosso, chiamata anche Cappuccetto, è una bambina che vive con la sua mamma in una casetta vicino al bosco. Un giorno la mamma le consegna un cestino pieno di cose buone da portare alla nonna malata, che vive al di là della foresta. La mamma raccomanda a Cappuccetto di fare attenzione, durante il tragitto. Nel bosco, però, la bambina incontra un lupo, che con l’inganno le si avvicina e si fa rivelare dove abita la nonna. Il lupo così si allontana, arriva prima di lei alla casetta, bussa alla porta, presentandosi alla nonna come la nipotina, e così apre la porta e se la mangia in un sol boccone. Cappuccetto Rosso arriva più tardi alla casetta, entra e trova il lupo nel letto, travestito da nonna, e anche la bambina viene a sua volta divorata in un sol boccone. Successivamente un cacciatore, amico della nonna di Cappuccetto, si accorge di quello che è accaduto, si precipita nella casa dell’anziana signora e apre la pancia del lupo, dalla quale fuoriescono immediatamente la nonna e Cappuccetto Rosso sane e salve. Con il loro aiuto il cacciatore riempie la pancia del lupo di pietre per sostituire il peso delle due donne. Una volta sveglio, il lupo, nonostante il pasto precedente l’abbia saziato, si sente ancora pesante, così decide di uscire a fare una passeggiata. Dopo aver fatto appena pochi passi, però, cade a terra affannato e muore. La nonna, il cacciatore e Cappuccetto Rosso festeggiano. La piccola può tornare a casa senza ulteriori preoccupazioni e anche l’uomo si allontana portando il corpo del lupo con sè per farne delle pellicce.

L’episodio inizia con un flashback riassuntivo di tutti gli episodi. Si arriva poi a fine XIX secolo, periodo della seconda guerra anglo-afghana, dove il dottor John Watson racconta del suo servizio in Afghanistan, dal quale si è ritirato a causa di una grave ferita. Dopo il congedo, il medico dall’esercito va a Londra, dove è accolto da Stamford, suo compagno di studi alla Barts, che gli fa incontrare Sherlock Holmes, intento a battere cadaveri con un bastone per stabilire il principio di lividi dopo la morte, il quale invita Watson a condividere il suo nuovo appartamento a Baker Street; Watson accetta. Si arriva poi a natale del 1895, dove Watson e Holmes stanno girando su una carrozza a Londra, e il giornale The Strand sta promuovendo una nuova storia di Watson, L’avventura del carbonchio azzurro. Arrivati a Baker Street vengono visitati dall’ispettore Lestrade, che si presenta a Holmes e Watson con un caso sconcertante: Emilia Ricoletti, una sposa impazzita, aveva sparato dal balcone ai passanti, per poi suicidarsi sparandosi in bocca. Più tardi il signor Ricoletti, mentre usciva da una fumeria d’oppio, era stato affrontato da Emilia, ancora vestita da sposa, che gli aveva sparato prima di scomparire nella nebbia. Incuriosito dalla sopravvivenza apparente di Emilia, Holmes accetta il caso. All’obitorio, uno scontroso dottor Hooper informa Holmes che la donna che si è uccisa, la donna che ha ucciso il signor Ricoletti e il corpo a portata di mano sono stati tutti identificati come Emilia Ricoletti. Ostacolato, Holmes perde interesse al caso. Quando però la sposa torna apparentemente per uccidere altri uomini, deduce che questi sono crimini eseguiti con lo stesso copione...
